Massage Therapy and Hypermobility
at Align Bodywork
Hypermobility occurs when a joint moves beyond the normal range of motion. When this affects multiple joints throughout the body, it’s known as generalized joint hypermobility. For some people, hypermobility is benign, or has no symptoms. For others, it’s part of a broader connective tissue disorder, such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) that may be contributing to pain, mobility limitations, and more.
Hypermobility disorders are complex and often affect more than just the joints. Muscles may be in a constant state of overwork as they attempt to stabilize joints that ligaments can no longer fully support. This chronic compensation can lead to persistent muscle tension, fatigue, and widespread discomfort.
Why Massage Therapy Needs to Be Different
While massage can be incredibly helpful, traditional techniques like deep tissue massage or aggressive stretching can sometimes cause harm for hypermobile clients. Over-relaxing the muscles that are supporting unstable joints may worsen instability and pain, rather than relieve it.
At Align Bodywork, we use therapeutic approaches that support the body’s need for stability while easing pain and tension. We assess the body as a whole, and use specific techniques based on this assessment during treatment. Every client’s body is different, and our treatments are always tailored to the individual.
Therapies That May Be Helpful Include:
Myofascial Release – gentle, sustained pressure that targets fascial restrictions
Swedish Massage – light to moderate pressure that calms the nervous system
Specific Trigger Point Release – to reduce muscle pain without overstimulating tissues
Craniosacral Therapy – a very gentle approach that can support relaxation, balance, and nervous system regulation
Osteopathic Manual Therapy Techniques and Visceral Manipulation - these specific, focused techniques can be used to address areas commonly overlooked with traditional massage such as the abdominal organs, lungs, ribs, and more.
We generally avoid techniques that may compromise joint stability, such as deep tissue work, passive stretching, or methods that overly relax muscles in clients with hypermobility conditions.
Our Approach at Align Bodywork
We bring both personal and professional experience to working with hypermobility and related conditions. We understand that symptoms can fluctuate, and that chronic pain, fatigue, and comorbid conditions like POTS, MCAS, or fibromyalgia often go hand in hand.
Your treatment at Align Bodywork is guided by a deep understanding of how your body functions. We consider your unique presentation, triggers, and needs, and adjust our techniques accordingly.
We’re here not just to offer temporary relief, but to help you break the cycle of pain, support your nervous system, and restore function and quality of life over time.
